HOW HEALTHY IS YOUR VOICE?

Taking care of your voice is as important as taking care of your body. Most people do not pay attention to their voice health until they lose it. The following tips are essential in maintaining good voice health:

  • Guard yourself against emotional stress like divorce and insufficient sleep. Emotional stress causes a strain of the voice.
  • Avoid shouting, excessive talking, crying, violent sneezing and even coughing. They cause voice strain.
  • Drink lots of water and avoid things that contain alcohol and caffeine. Your vocal cords need lots of hydration to perform optimally.
  • Eat a balanced diet. Look out for foods rich in vitamins A,E and C, which keeps mucus membranes in the throat healthy and help improve the quality of the vocal cords.
  • Use salt water to gargle if you feel a tickle in your throat, but do it sparingly, as too much salt on the vocal cords harm the quality of your voice. The salt water solution helps to break down any mucus or other irritants in the throat.
  • Seek medical advice if you notice unusual changes in your voice.
